Qualifications

The COE Specialist-Battery Thermal System Engineer leads the product design and development activities related to battery thermal systems and components for hybrid/electric vehicle battery systems.

This position entails working closely with HV battery release engineers, HV battery suppliers, HV battery & vehicle packaging engineers & aerothermal and vehicle thermal engineers to lead battery design sufficiency analysis and release activities related to thermal system and components.

The COE Specialist-Battery Thermal System Engineer will be responsible to ensure that the HV battery meets all thermal related best practices and system requirements, and developing air, liquid and refrigerant-based cooling/heating solutions to meet the functional requirements of HV battery systems and components.

Additionally, the COE Specialist-Battery Thermal System Engineer will be responsible for:

  • the creation and maintenance of FCA COE documentation and technical specifications outlining best practices for HV battery thermal system and understanding and tracking all system and vehicle requirements related to battery thermal

  • leading battery critical design reviews focusing on system thermal & support component, subcomponent & vehicle thermal and road testing

  • working with product release teams to solve application issues during product design & testing

  • collaborating with other battery COE specialists (cell, mechanical, and electrical) and vehicle thermal management teams to develop optimized design solutions for high performance battery systems

  • closely working with controls engineers to ensure that battery and vehicle control schemes will meet thermal requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited university or equivalent

  • Minimum 8 years of experience with HV thermal system design and integration and fluid distribution systems in support of production programs or a similar role

  • Experience in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and systems engineering skills

  • Experience with electric vehicle thermal/cooling systems is a plus

  • Experience with cooling equipment selection, sizing and specification

  • Experience of component design and release process, including APQP and PPAP

  • Familiarity with automotive energy storage systems

  • Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering drawings and specifications

  • Familiarity with CAD and CAE

  • DVP&R and DFMEA creation and execution experience

  • Good analytical and problem solving skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

  • Ability to interface with key customers, cross-functional teams, and all levels of personnel/management

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Able to manage multiple responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace/Aeronautical) with emphasis in heat transfer/thermal concentration

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Electrical Vehicle/HV Battery/Electrified Components- Thermal System and Components, Design and/or Product Release

  • Minimum One years of experience with battery and vehicle thermal system testing and/or analysis

  • High voltage or electrified vehicle training and hands on work experience

  • Design for Six Sigma Certification

  • Experience in 1D and 3D thermal simulation tools, models and analysis
