Job Overview


The Fuel Cell and Capacitive Energy Storage Lead is responsible for the fuel cell and capacitive energy storage groups, within the Energy Storage and Conversion Organization. The group is responsible for the identification, evaluation and selection of fuel cell system and super capacitor technologies that enable FCA’s global and regional product and business objectives.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing program Fuel Cell Systems (FCS) and Capacitive Energy Storage Systems (CESS) that satisfy Energy Storage and vehicle level functional objectives down to the primary component design level

  • Coordinating packaging activities with BCI team and advanced battery pack design team

  • Executing programs through MR1/TRL4 that meet or exceed objectives for performance, cost, weight, investment, and quality

  • Supporting a successful TRL5 execution, through to MR2

  • Developing and publishing FCS and CESS performance standards

  • Ensuring and socializing TRL maturity of new technologies, through management of decoupled and innovation projects, and through regular technology reviews

  • Engaging team in multidisciplinary and multi-functional team collaborations

  • Developing team workload bandwidth and competencies commensurate with FCA technology and business goals

  • Managing and communicating team organizational KPIs

  • Managing annual team budgets

  • Tracking development of the next generation of Fuel Cell and Super Capacitor technologies through conference attendance & participation with USABC and other organizations

  • Leading the development of technology roadmaps for Fuel Cell and Capacitive Energy Storage systems and components

  • Ensuring technology roadmaps are aligned with the future needs of FCA propulsion systems

  • Defining Subsystem and component requirements based on vehicle propulsion system applications

  • Supporting development of product specifications, source package generation and evaluation of supplier technical solutions

  • Providing technical clarification of designs to suppliers and manufacturing

  • Developing system and component DFMEA’s

  • Developing testing strategies and validation plans

  • Ensuring proper plans for resources, timelines and milestones are in place for each project and report the integrated work of the department to the management

  • Ensuring deliverables of the Global Vehicle Development (GVD) & Global Powertrain Development (GPD) program gates

  • Managing suppliers, resolve issues and problems that arise

  • Providing status updates on issues or projects to the senior leadership team

  • Setting internal goals, develop and improve existing processes to ensure quality and budget goals are met

  • Providing employee performance feedback at yearly reviews

  • Leading recruitment and retention of top talent in the industry

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering or related engineering field from an ABET accredited/equivalent university

  • Minimum of 10 years in product engineering design, CAD, development and/or testing

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the leading of teams

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in advanced/R&D environments

  • Understanding of the function and performance characteristics of all propulsion system components such as engines, batteries, inverters, DC to DC converters, on-board chargers, electric motors and transmissions, and their interactions

  • Understanding of the key functional parameters that can be varied in order to meet higher level system requirements, and the trade-off analyses that are required to determine the optimum system architecture to meet the vehicle level functional objectives

  • Understanding of the engineering development processes to ensure robust design development

  • Understanding of industry trends in the areas of Fuel Cells and Capacitive Energy Storage systems and components

  • Familiarity with Technology Readiness Level (TRL) framework of technology development

  • Ability to review drawings and package studies in CAD

  • Familiarity with the development of source packages, specifications, DFMEA and DVP&R through the complete product cycle (from sourcing approval to serial production)

  • Must have experience in one or more vehicle functional areas (Body, Interior, Chassis, Exterior, Electrical, Powertrain, Restraints)

  • Experience in problem solving

  • Strong technical research and writing skills

  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment

  • Self-starter

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Safety conscious

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Business, as accredited by ABET or ABET equivalent

  • Experience in the full product life cycle

  • Reactive and/or DFSS Black Belt

  • Google Suite expertise

  • Previous High Voltage battery or fuel cell system design and release

  • 3+ years CAD, CAE experience at a OEM or Tier 1 supplier

  • Thorough knowledge of electrification technology functionality and features on the system level

  • Ability to resolve conflicting requirements across multiple organizations

  • Possess excellent leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Hands on experience working with HV batteries or other electro-mechanical assemblies

  • Engine experience is also a plus
