Nexteer Automotive HMI Engineer (2021) in Auburn Hills, Michigan
POSITION: HMI (Human Machine Interface) Engineer
Nexteer Research and Development applies Nexteer’s motion control expertise to innovate next-generation products for both automotive and non-automotive applications. We have launched an exciting new initiative to develop software product offerings that leverage our expertise in steering, chassis, and vehicle. We are expanding our role in developing controls algorithms that would enhance driver’s ability to be safer and effectiveand we are looking for an HMI engineer to support this initiative.
These algorithms must be natural and simple for the driver to use. They must be easy to understand and not complicate the driving task. Therefore, the knowledge and experience in Human Machine Interface (HMI) is essential to arrive at solutions that the drivers would enjoy using. A successful candidate would interface with algorithm developers to make sure of that. They would also design and conduct driver clinics to determine the effectiveness of various options among general population
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for HMI analysis and design of of L2+ ADAS Controls Algorithm
Make sure the information these algorithms provide to the driver is appropriate. Not overload of information and not ambiguous either.
Make sure Steering feel, Pedal feel, and Body feel are all appropriate for majority of drivers.
Design correct HMI among touch, visual, audible … for a particular feature.
Develop human reaction times and other HMI requirements for both Alertive and Luxury features.
Develop Arbitration algorithms (between Driver inputs and Machine inputs and among Chassis actuators) that meet HMI requirements.
Design and conduct driver Clinics to gather driver feedback and appropriateness of the HMI designs.
Perform Data analysis and develop tools that assists in getting valuable feedback from the drivers.
Perform Simulation to predict/analyze performance and bench testing together with in-vehicle development.

Experience in design of HMI systems is required.
Experience in conducting HMI clinics and analysis of subject feedbacks is required.
Experience in MATLAB/Simulink is required.
Experience in Rapid Prototyping Controllers (Micro Autobox) and Vehicle Dynamics software packages (CarSim or Car Maker) is a plus.
Experience in Automotive Engineering and Chassis systems (steering, braking, suspension) and driveline is highly desirable.
Familiarity w information exchanges between Cloud and onboard controllers is preferred.
Knowledge of System Safety is a plus.
Degree: Masters in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, or Computer Science required
PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, or Computer Science preferred
Willing to consider candidates with a Masters or PhD in Psychology as long as they hold an Engineering degree as well
