Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering team explores new vehicle and societal innovations that require some level of invention before they can be applied to our products and services. The team is building on a history of Ford innovation, including our invention of the three-way catalytic converter to modernize vehicle emissions controls in the 1970s and the world’s first rear inflatable seat belts in 2010.

Today, we are exploring and delivering ways to make smarter vehicles and our transportation system more efficient to improve people’s lives by helping them move more freely, safely and enjoyably. For example, we are changing how our products are made by creating high-quality vehicles in an environmentally and socially responsible way, including the use sustainable materials. Since 2000, we have used 12 industry and world-first plant-based materials in our production vehicles. We also are researching the possible use of tomato skin, bamboo, agave fiber, dandelion roots, algae and coffee chaff as part of our ambitious goal of making our vehicles with up of 20 percent sustainable material by 2025.

What you will be able to do

Are you highly motivated with a passion for engineering automated systems? Do you have proven success in failure analysis? Are you ready to partner with a multidisciplinary team to transform project research into practical product level embedded solutions? We are seeking a results-driven professional to enhance our failure, risk and release assessment capabilities while working in the ADAS, Robotics and Model Based Engineering (MBE) section of Research and Advanced Engineering - Controls and Automated Systems organization. You will:

  • Apply expertise in failure analysis of highly automated Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) enabled systems

  • Perform risk assessment to advance the state-of-the-art in evaluation of concept/production readiness

  • Develop evaluation techniques and assessment metrics to align with the safety of the intended function (SOTIF) per ISO21448 with a focus on risk assessment and release readiness evaluation

  • Evaluate structured functional safety processes per ISO26262

  • Model systems and extend our process to explore failure mode analysis and safety over operational scenarios within sophisticated virtual environments

  • Perform System Engineering, design and build specifications (SysML), FMA work products (incl. FMEA/FTA) based on system assessment, models and advanced simulations for advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) technologies

  • Improve reuse through translation and traceability of engineering artifacts across multiple subject areas and toolsets

The minimum requirements we seek

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Natural Sciences

  • Two or more years of experience performing a combination of System or Software Engineering with Failure Mode Analysis and/or Safety Analysis

  • Two plus years of experience in a development role performing simulation for either advanced automated system(s) and/or other systems with embedded AI/ML

Our preferred requirements

  • PhD in Computer Science, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Robotics or related fields

  • Strong background in mathematics, statistics and probability theory, degradation modeling

  • Experience analyzing data sets (e.g. data gathering, data set quality, data correlation, etc.)

  • Experience in developing physically and empirically based models/simulations

  • Understanding modeling city, road segments and highway environments/vehicle scenarios

  • Experience with embedded algorithms

  • Background in integration, verification, validation and software development lifecycle

  • Experience with goal structured analysis for Functional Safety (ISO26262) or Safety of the Intended Function (SOTIF), especially design confirmation and quality metrics related to development of machine learning applications

  • Experience working in a team-based project from inception to finish across multiple subject areas (e.g. systems engineering, mathematical modeling, algorithm development, application implementation, etc.)

  • Knowledge of ontology development and data standardization

  • Experience in developing physically and empirically based models/simulations to verify that proposed concepts and strategies meet the requirements
