As the Autonomous Vehicle Robustness Engineer, your role will be to ensure that the subsystems of Ford’s autonomous vehicle work together seamlessly to produce a safe, compliant, robust vehicle that meets customer and business needs. The ideal candidate needs to be an effective communicator who is skilled at bringing together pieces of a complex puzzle. What you’ll be able to do:

We are seeking an engineer to join our Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Robustness team. This team is responsible for writing, managing, and validating the all-new requirements and performance specifications for the self-driving system and facilitating the overall engineering signoff of Ford’s autonomous vehicle. You will be responsible for

  • Write engineering requirements for the self-driving system of Ford’s AV. These requirements are derived from federal, state, and local laws, safety expectations, industry standard methodologies, business needs, operational needs, user experience (UX) flows, and failure mode avoidance (FMA) analyses.

  • Define safety and performance metrics for the self-driving system based on simulation, track testing, and real-world driving.

  • Write and manage execution of the Design Verification Plan (DVP) used for Ford’s engineering sign-off of the self-driving system, including authorship of new test methods and acceptance criteria.

  • Work with all subsystem and feature owners that are responsible for engineering requirements for the self-driving system to ensure consistent, coordinated requirements and validation plans that meet project expectations and timing.

  • Assist with implementing technical methods to measure and improve simulation fidelity and credibility.

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • Two or more years of experience in design of automotive or aerospace systems. (coursework/internship/co-op experience allowed)

  • Two or more years of experience creating, r Design Verification Plan (DVP). (coursework/internship/co-op experience allowed)

Our preferred requirements:

  • Advanced degree (Masters or higher) in engineering, computer science, physics, and/or related technical subject areas

  • At least two years of experience in safety engineering, Driver Assistance Technology (DAT/ADAS), chassis electronics, systems engineering, system integration, electrical system design/architecture, calibration, performance attributes, vehicle dynamics and/or a related area

  • Experience in authoring new engineering requirements, test method development, crafting new validation strategies, and/or robustness engineering of a complex system

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to adapt your communication style for the audience

  • Experience assessing the fidelity of a model/simulation.

  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills

  • Autonomous vehicle interest and comfortable working in a dynamic area

  • Self-motivated and willing to take responsibility to deliver results with minimal supervision
