Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering team explores new vehicle and societal innovations that require some level of invention before they can be applied to our products and services. The team is building on a history of Ford innovation, including our invention of the three-way catalytic converter to modernize vehicle emissions controls in the 1970s and the world’s first rear inflatable seat belts in 2010.

Today, we are exploring and delivering ways to make smarter vehicles and our transportation system more efficient to improve people’s lives by helping them move more freely, safely and enjoyably. For example, we are changing how our products are made by creating high-quality vehicles in an environmentally and socially responsible way, including the use sustainable materials. Since 2000, we have used 12 industry and world-first plant-based materials in our production vehicles. We also are researching the possible use of tomato skin, bamboo, agave fiber, dandelion roots, algae and coffee chaff as part of our ambitious goal of making our vehicles with up of 20 percent sustainable material by 2025.

What you will be able to do

Engineering complex electrified propulsion systems in today’s competitive market requires sophisticated model-based development methodologies that can help deliver optimized products quickly and efficiently. There is a critical need to efficiently explore and identify high leverage system opportunities for improving the customer user experience and value of our electrified vehicle products. The candidate for this position would address this need through the development and application of modeling and simulation methods that account for key transient system interactions and behaviors with other physical domains as well as controls. You will:

  • Perform model-based system design and systems analysis of climate and thermal management systems for electrified vehicles and related propulsion systems

  • Perform up front model-based climate and thermal system design and optimization of critical propulsion attributes that can improve on road range, reduce energy consumption, extend battery life and improve performance of electrified vehicles

  • Conduct analysis emphasizing thermal and climate system interactions with other physical subsystems such as high voltage battery, electric drive, as well as with all relevant control systems

  • Integration of climate and thermal subsystem models into fully electrified virtual vehicle prototypes

  • Conduct vehicle model commissioning, debugging and correlation to ensure proper climate and thermal systems operation coupled with relevant controls and other physical subsystems

  • Create climate system and vehicle model correlation and analysis documentation

  • Support development of advanced thermal and climate system technologies aligned with strategic technology roadmaps

The minimum requirements we seek

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field of study

  • 3+ years of combined experience with following:

  • Experience with climate model-based system modeling platforms (e.g. Modelica, GT Suite, AmeSim), with application to electrified vehicle systems

  • Electrified vehicle operation and systems analysis with an emphasis on the interactions of climate and thermal systems with other physical domains and controls

  • Climate/thermal systems design, testing and methodologies

  • Vehicle testing methodologies and analysis of data

Our preferred requirements

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field of study

  • 4+ years of experience in vehicle climate and thermal management systems analysis

  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
