What you will be able to do

We are looking for a hardworking, technically strong engineer to deliver sophisticated global car and truck programs from concept to production environments. This career opportunity is in the area of Mass Properties within Vehicle Engineering Energy Management. Mass Properties Energy Management will showcase your knowledge, skills and leadership during all phases of our new global car and truck programs. Mass Properties leads the development and delivery of global platform and vehicle mass strategies to optimize customer attributes and Fuel Economy/Emission/Safety certifications simultaneously in multiple markets. You will be working with interfacing commodity-engineering activities to ensure successful implementation of optimized design and attribute solutions. You will:


  • Perform calculations for all Mass and Ratings required on Regulatory Load Rating Labels (e.g. GAWR, GVWR, Payload, etc.)

  • Ensure the platform compatibility as described in program direction documents


  • Mass prediction utilizing Ford processes for parametric and analytical methods in order to provide mass estimation for Vehicles Loads and reactions at various loading conditions

  • Manage data in support of legal labeling and spring selection


  • Build and maintain Mass and Capabilities Strategy to provide a competitive position against other OEM products

  • Advance the WEIGHT Strategy through discussion and agreements with other vehicle attributes and program leadership


  • Determine mass distributions and inertia characteristics that are inputs to structural and dynamic analyses as well as NVH and safety


  • Involved with statistical analysis of vehicle weighing and part/option weight auditing

  • Gather the latest assumptions and weight estimates at each landmark to verify compliance and alignment to other attributes


  • Prepare data for recommendations to Program, Certification Engineering and federal labeling requirements

  • Involved with inquiries from NHTSA and EPA

  • Support Marketing’s need for public facing mass information

  • Occasional overnight travel to assembly plant(s) may be a possibility

The minimum requirements we seek

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science

  • 1+ year of experience in the ground transportation and/or aerospace industry in an engineering/analytical capacity (coursework/internship/co-op experience allowed)

Our preferred requirements

  • Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science

  • 5+ years of experience in the ground transportation or aerospace industries in an engineering/analytical capacity

  • Functional understanding of powertrain, chassis, body structure and electrical systems

  • Understanding of vehicle architecture, standard vehicle materials properties (e.g. steels, aluminum, plastics, etc.) and assembly plant end of line processes

  • Knowledge of applied systems engineering, interface management, multi-attribute optimization

  • Background in applied statistics or Six Sigma subject areas, experience in Minitab

  • Demonstrated leadership of collaborative/distributed global teams

  • Solid Understanding of CAE tools (e.g. CATIA, Teamcenter, etc.)

  • Self-directed, confident individual with excellent communication skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office
