Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering team explores new vehicle and societal innovations that require some level of invention before they can be applied to our products and services. The team is building on a history of Ford innovation, including our invention of the three-way catalytic converter to modernize vehicle emissions controls in the 1970s and the world’s first rear inflatable seat belts in 2010.
Today, we are exploring and delivering ways to make smarter vehicles and our transportation system more efficient to improve people’s lives by helping them move more freely, safely and enjoyably. For example, we are changing how our products are made by creating high-quality vehicles in an environmentally and socially responsible way, including the use sustainable materials. Since 2000, we have used 12 industry and world-first plant-based materials in our production vehicles. We also are researching the possible use of tomato skin, bamboo, agave fiber, dandelion roots, algae and coffee chaff as part of our ambitious goal of making our vehicles with up of 20 percent sustainable material by 2025.
What you will be able to do
Looking to accelerate your career with a forward-looking transportation leader? This is the opportunity for you! We are looking to you to help us optimize our customer-focused vehicle attributes. You will calibrate control strategies of a wide range of sophisticated propulsion technologies – conventional, hybrid and fully electric – in order to optimize key vehicle attributes (e.g. range, fuel economy, drivability, performance, emissions, etc.). This will involve meeting regulatory requirements while also advancing mobility products that are competitive and fun to drive. You will:
Perform calibration of propulsion control strategies to optimize key system attributes using vehicle and dyno-based environments
Solve hardware, controls, calibration and instrumentation issues as needed
Develop test plans to perform design validation testing under critical noise factors to deliver robust system performance, including supporting test trips
Perform in depth analysis of results
Provide data driven recommendations for further improvements
Effectively integrate CAE methods in the calibration development processes to improve DV efficiency
Find opportunities to leverage connectivity to optimize the propulsion system performance
Effectively collaborate with interfacing team members from Research and Advanced Engineering and Product Development
The minimum requirements we seek
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
Two or more years of experience with powertrain calibration development and testing, evaluating factors that influence fuel economy, drivability, performance and/or emissions
One plus year of experience with powertrain control systems for hybrid and/or fully electric powertrains
Our preferred requirements
Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
Hand-on experience in calibration development of hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)
In-depth knowledge of propulsion systems and interactions between various sub-systems
Experience in using CAN and rapid prototype tools (e.g. Vector tools, dSpace, etc.)
Proficiency with analysis and calibration tools (e.g. Matlab, ATI, etc.)
Self-motivation with excellent teamwork, communication and multi-tasking skills
