Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering team explores new vehicle and societal innovations that require some level of invention before they can be applied to our products and services. The team is building on a history of Ford innovation, including our invention of the three-way catalytic converter to modernize vehicle emissions controls in the 1970s and the world’s first rear inflatable seat belts in 2010.
Today, we are exploring and delivering ways to make smarter vehicles and our transportation system more efficient to improve people’s lives by helping them move more freely, safely and enjoyably. For example, we are changing how our products are made by creating high-quality vehicles in an environmentally and socially responsible way, including the use sustainable materials. Since 2000, we have used 12 industry and world-first plant-based materials in our production vehicles. We also are researching the possible use of tomato skin, bamboo, agave fiber, dandelion roots, algae and coffee chaff as part of our ambitious goal of making our vehicles with up of 20 percent sustainable material by 2025.
What you will be able to do
Key work areas for the team include developing a comprehensive portfolio and roadmap of Ford’s in-vehicle computing needs. You will work with vendors on the future designs, sophisticated Electrical Engineering (EE) architecture on module level designs and support innovations in module design. Our team will also work with non-traditional vendors on the role for future high performance computing capabilities. You will:
Design future computing platforms, tying into the overall image of sophisticated EE architectures that drive the company
Be involved with Ford's development of sophisticated computing solutions for our next generation EE architectures
Operate required machinery and equipment in a safe manner following established safety rules
Maintain a neat and clean work area, following established tool and instrument control procedures
Report any unsafe acts or conditions to his or her immediate supervisor
The minimum requirements we seek
Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering
One or more years of experience with automotive microcontrollers and/or microprocessors (coursework/internship/co-op experience allowed)
One plus year of experience with memory technologies (coursework/internship/co-op experience allowed)
Our preferred requirements
Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
In-depth knowledge of vehicle electrical systems and electrical design/development process
Experience with automotive and/or other advanced networking
Familiarity with ISO 26262
Background with vehicle I/O
Understanding of the Research and Advanced Engineering project processes including GTDS
Ability to quickly learn
Strong organization skills, attention to details and ability to work with multiple people
Ability to clearly and concisely communicate and interact with others, both oral and written
Ability to work with many activities and champion issue resolution
