The Distribution Designer will work within our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Global Practice to perform the following duties:
Responsible for the design of low to medium voltage (2.4-69kV) distribution and subtransmission lines using CADD/GIS design and mapping software.
Prepare and develop distribution and subtransmission voltage construction packages for both overhead and underground projects, including distribution equipment installation, new conduit and duct bank design, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder design.
Provide QA/QC of data collected by subcontractors support during field investigations.
Adhere to Burns & McDonnell’s safety programs, trainings, and policies, as well as promote and manage the Safety & Health performance of BMcD project team members and subcontractors.
Plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Review contract documents with project manager to verify compliance of subcontractors, safety and health requirements, and schedule.
Manage communication with client, regulatory, and public entities on project-related matters. This includes, but is not limited to, submitting advanced notices to road authorities for lane closures, scheduling client operators to support BMcD field investigations, etc
Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices but may involve a variety of complex features.
Requires general knowledge of precedents in specialty areas and familiarity with basic principles and practices in related specialties.
May coordinate departmental and divisional project studies and report preparation assignments.
This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.
Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design for the projects.
Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.
Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of one’s work.
Other duties will be assigned as required.
Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and two years related experience or associate's degree and three years related experience or four years progressive detailing and design experience.
Professional understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, GIS and Excel to develop the design deliverables.
Proficient knowledge in design, calculations, and design systems.
Knowledgeable in the theory and practices of civil and/or electrical disciplines; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.
Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers, Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.
OSHA 10 and OSHA 30-hour certification strongly preferred.
Experience entering enclosed/confined spaces or overseeing contractors entering enclosed/confined spaces preferred.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access).
Experience with document control, scheduling, and project management software a plus.
Multiple years of experience on construction project sites in the industries of aviation, commercial, energy, government, manufacturing, oil & gas, process, transportation, transmission & distribution, or water. Construction experience on transmission and/or distribution projects strongly preferred.
Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
Must be able to meet the company's driving requirements.
