Description

Under general supervision, performs responsible technical work in the field of traffic engineering; and investigates and analyzes traffic and/or transportation problems

Examples of Duties

  • Investigates, collects and analyzes data on traffic conditions especially as they relate to traffic flows.

  • Performs design studies and analyzes of traffic problems related to the design and positioning of traffic structures and accessories.

  • Examines alternative traffic control devices for effectiveness and makes recommendations on the selection and layout of selected equipment.

  • Directs the preparation of maps and layouts of proposed traffic structures with indications as to their general characteristics.

  • Assigns and outlines detail work to subordinates, instructs them on objectives and procedures, and reviews their work during process and upon completion.

  • May supervise Assistant Engineers and other technical staff members.

  • Devises standard methods and forms for collection and presentation of traffic data.

  • Develops traffic survey techniques.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a traffic engineering or traffic planning related field.

  • Three years of experience in traffic and related planning activities; including the study and installation of traffic controls in urban areas and statistical analysis and reporting of traffic data.

  • One year of supervisory experience preferred.

Equivalency

Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid State of Michigan Operator License required. Employees in this class will be required to provide and operate a motor vehicle on a reimbursed mileage basis.

Supplemental Information

  • Principles and methods of traffic engineering design and construction.

  • Standards and practices of traffic engineering.

  • Statistical principles and practices as applied to engineering data.

  • Problems of traffic control and the principles, methods and equipment involved in their solution.

  • Computerized design and drafting tools.

SKILL IN:

  • Use of personal computers and computer aided drafting and design (CADD) equipment.

  • Use of standard engineering and specialized traffic engineering applications software, such as Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, etc.

  • Use of common office and project management software.

ABILITY TO:

  • Analyze problems related to traffic engineering design and structures.

  • Plan and supervise work related to the design, selection and placement of traffic structures and appurtenances.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Interact with vendors, contractors, consultants, developers, subordinates and peers in a tactful and effective manner.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Work is performed in a variety of shop, plant, field and office locations, sometimes involves exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service. (In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
