Saint-Gobain Sr. Applications Engineer, Automotive- Remote Position in Detroit, Michigan

** This position will be a remote position based in the greater Detroit region. This position will require frequent travel for customer visits and travel to NY where NA plants are located.

The Senior Applications Engineer supporting the Automotive/OEM customer segment and is primarily responsible for providing technical support to Saint-Gobain field sales personnel and customers, including: product technical training, new product introduction, application testing, benchmarking and certification testing and translating customers’ needs to the product development team for action.

This position serves as a direct link between customers and the business with responsibility for responding to technical and application issues, creating, measuring and maintaining data, reporting results and initiating action.

The Technical Services Team supports 5 Major Brands, more than 50 product families, and many thousand individual part configurations. The Sr. Applications Engineer acts as an information conduit between the customer, sales, business management, R&D and Customer Service. You will be the liason and provide attention understanding all aspects of our products that bring Distinctive Value to our customers. Customer applications are highly varied, and change frequently with the introduction of new technology. The position interacts with customers in a highly technical manner where a thorough understanding of customer’s processes is vitally important.

Essential Functions

CUSTOMER SUPPORT ( 50%)

Communicate product features and benefits to customers and Saint-Gobain sales team. Respond to customer application requests, manage corrective actions, including on site collaboration to develop solutions; provide engineering support to customer service personnel, including customer specification review, and product selection. Collect, analyze, consolidate and publish product data. Write internal reports on progress of the technical support requests. Write external reports and prepares presentations according to customer needs

GROWTH ( 30%)

Gain a deep understanding of targeted applications, including relevant specifications, competitive products, and benchmarking. Lead product qualification efforts, consistent with the strategic direction of product management

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT( 20%)

Recommend and implement methods to increase the quality of products and/or services. Indicate problem opportunities and points of attention using previous experiences. Build and maintain internal and external networks of subject matter experts. Attend trade shows, industry seminars, and technical training. Application developments and competitive developments

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree, Engineering, Material Science or Technology is required

Master’s Degree, Engineering, Material Science or Business is preferred

Work Experience:

5+ years’ experience of material engineering / material qualification experience with an automotive Tier 1 or OEM is required

Knowledge of automotive industry material qualification protocols is required

Design and/or specification experience with engineering plastics or adhesive systems is required

Experience with automotive qualification process is required

Experience using statistical tools for process capability analysis is preferred

Experience in customer facing role such as technical support or technical sales is highly preferred

Computer literate – Microsoft Office and technical packages (Excel / Word / PowerPoint) is required

Position requires understanding of automotive industry business practices, strong communication skills (both written and verbal), ability to interact with customers and management at all levels is required

Experience with IATF 16949 is preferred

The ability to lead without direct authority

A high level of customer intimacy and interaction with customer engineering and purchasing teams is required. Engineering concepts are highly technical and require the knowledge and confidence to effectively communicate to others

Experience with Problem Solving Methodology – Root Cause Analysis / FMEA
