This is an exciting opportunity in the Kalamazoo Michigan area for a Functional Excellence Director. This position will lead and manage a multi-disciplined organization that supports each of our automated transmission product line engineering teams. Primary responsibility is to lead several functional groups that provide systems engineering, mechanical design, product engineering, controls engineering, and verification/validation services to the engineering product managers’ teams within a matrix engineering organization utilizing both core resources as well as resources that reside within the JV’s parent organizations.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Lead, manage and develop technically capable people across multiple technical disciplines and sites.

  • Drive consistency within the functional engineering teams across products.

  • Build upon the learning culture that exists and drive process improvement across all functions.

  • Develop strategies and resource plans to support the engineering needs for the product teams.

  • Establish resourcing plans, recruiting approaches and budget estimations that provide input to the Annual Operating Plan.

  • Determine and execute succession plans for critical resources.

  • Establish employee performance expectations and performance standards.

  • Work collaboratively with engineering product line leads and the JV leadership team.

  • Coach and mentor functional engineering leads and technical experts within the team.

  • Primary responsibility is the development of technically capable people across multiple technical sites within a business unit or corporate area, and making people available to perform duties necessary to satisfy the businesses technical needs.

  • Provides technical leadership for the business's most complex global technical challenges.

  • Sets the direction for the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or across business units.

  • Coaches and mentors the future technical leaders across a global business unit or corporate area.

  • Assesses performance and provides feedback to direct reports.

  • Develops strategies, creates or improves work processes involving activities such as resource allocation and management, organizational and business change, customer/stakeholder management and knowledge management; all used for the purposes of enabling high quality decision making that meets business expectations.

  • Decisions made in this role may include resource deployment cost and timing allocations, project prioritization, personnel staffing, and Annual Operating Plan (AOP) management, the result of which can impact project cost and delivery within a site or across several sites within a business unit.

  • Establishes employee performance standards; works collaboratively to set goals and address areas of deficiency.

  • Develops and delivers technical talent in a research, technology or product development environment.

  • Responsible for managing the resources that maximize organizational productivity in support of business needs and establishing/implementing longer term business strategies. Maintains strong working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders both within the technical function and across the broader business.



System Requirements Engineering - Uses appropriate methods and tools to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements to which designs are developed; establishes acceptance criteria for the system of interest through analysis, allocation and negotiation; tracks the status of requirements throughout the system life cycle; assesses the impact of changes to system requirements on project scope, schedule, and resources; creates and maintains information linkages to related artifacts.

System Capability Engineering - Identifies system capability and risks through analysis or experimental testing of the system, sub-system, or super system in the context of its environment; negotiates and verifies requirements against capability to guide project scope and system development accordingly; assesses legacy system versus proposed new system solution capabilities and makes decisions as to how best to achieve system capability with consideration of stakeholder trade-offs.

Technical Documentation - Documents information based on knowledge gained as part of technical function activities; communicates to stakeholders with the goal of enabling improved technical productivity and effective knowledge transfer to others who were not originally part of the initial learning.

Product Development Execution, Monitoring and Control - Plans, schedules, coordinates and executes the activities involved in developing a product to a respectively aligned hierarchy of requirements and technical profiles; monitors and communicates across functional boundaries to meet project resource and quality expectations; ensures product capability meets or exceeds expectations and takes mitigating actions when project risks are higher than expected; understands the full product life cycle process and stakeholders.

  • Proven leadership working in a product, technology or engineering service area with a successful track record of developing technical talent and enabling high performing teams that deliver on project expectations through a range of varying business scenarios and/or life-cycles.

  • Advanced level proficiency in many of the enterprise and functional competency areas.

  • Prior manager-of-managers leadership experience required with proven record of building effective teams

  • Background in product, systems or controls engineering required with track record if delivering on project expectations

  • Global management experience strongly preferred

  • Strong process improvement experience with successful results

  • Strong networking and communication skills

  • Track record of developing talent – career coach/mentor experience

Education, Licenses, Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required, MS preferred

Compensation and Benefits
