An automated guided vehicle (AGV) makes lights-out manufacturing and distribution possible by moving product within a process without human involvement. This requires excellence in mechatronic design, as well as, cutting edge software. Working within a global group, the Senior Electrical Engineer will apply knowledge of control loops, electrical power distribution, safety controllers, and emerging technologies to a quickly increasing set of vehicles that handle applications ranging from simple point-to-point movements to complex multi-vehicle interactions.

The Electrical Engineer reports to the Product Owner Mechatronics in North America and works as a part of the Vehicle Mechatronics group within Mobile Automation Product Development. Entrepreneurial thinking, the ability to design and innovate quickly, and sound engineering skills are key for a successful candidate.

The working environment is fast paced. Each team member works in a multi disciplined team innovating new features and capabilities in addition to being driven by a multi year roadmap. Senior members work to guide product and component development roadmaps and mentor / lead other team members.

AGV technology at KION is based on 35 years of real world application with over 8,000 AGVs being provided to customers so far.

Responsibilities:

  • Development of innovative designs for control, communication and charging.

  • Drive vendor product life cycles to meet design needs

  • Risk assessment and documentation in Sistema

  • Design and safety standard conformance documentation

  • Develop designs for global and local markets

  • Schematic development

  • Test plan development and support.

  • Supplier and component identification/selection

  • Provide support for Customer Service and issue resolution

  • Work with manufacturing teams to ensure designs can be produced globally and at high-volume.

Experience/Degree Required:

  • 4 year degree in Electrical Engineering

  • 5-7 years engineering experience in hardware design or mechatronics field.

Experience/Skill Preferred:

  • Masters in a related engineering discipline

  • Design and implementation of cable harnessing

  • Demonstrated ability with distributed control architecture and embedded control systems

  • Experience with CAN and Ethernet/IP based control system communication

  • Experience with Safety Laser Scanners and Safety Controller programming

  • Experience with E-Plan CAD system

  • Experience with AC motor controls and control logic

  • Understanding of ANSI, UL, and CE standards related to automated guided vehicles

  • Experience with PLC design (ladder logic and structured text)

  • Good communication with other engineering disciplines and manufacturing

  • Development of Lithium Ion battery technology and charging solutions

  • Experience in Industrial, or Automation, equipment, preferably: AGVs, electric vehicles, or automotive

  • Experience with designs for outdoor and hard environments

  • Experience with development of automated farm or agricultural equipment
