Eaton Corporation Lead Product Engineer in Jackson, Michigan

Eaton’s Fluid Electrical Distribution division, a part of our Aerospace group, is currently seeking a Lead Product Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Jackson, MI office.

Position Overview:

This Lead Engineer is responsible for leading innovation and/or new product development projects following a phase gated development approach (PreLaunch/ProLaunch) for the Aerospace market.

The role requires the ability to apply advanced mechanical engineering principles and basic electrical engineering principles enabling clean sheet design of mechanical and/or mechatronic products.

Innovation of existing products or clean sheet design shall be completed to meet evolving additive manufacturing and more electrification market trends for hydraulic, fuel, and coolant systems. This role will also support the development of bill of materials and non-recurring engineering (NRE) cost estimates for new project bids and proposals.

In this function you will:

  • Execute internal and customer technical deliverables on high complexity projects within the PRE/PROLaunch development process through the use of the Aerospace Common Engineering Standards.

  • Design and develop new products or re-design current products to meet customer requirements via cross functional collaboration with customers and an internal team including Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Program Management as well as product or process subject matter experts.

  • Identify project technical and schedule risks, prioritize based on quantified impact, and execute mitigation plans.

  • Evaluate design trade-offs using Design for Six Sigma tools.

  • Develop project technical execution plans to meet customer requirements and quote the labor, material, and other direct costs (MODC) required to execute the development and qualification programs, addressing technical risks prior to qualification.

  • Apply statistical and analytical tools towards effective problem-solving and completion of project activities.

  • Direct and support other global engineering resources for timely completion of project objectives.

  • Lead structured problem-solving efforts and/ or failure analysis to solve issues in a timely manner.

  • Conduct internal, supplier, and customer design reviews.

  • Write test procedures and qualification reports in support of program deliverables.

  • Lead process improvement efforts at local or cross functional level.

  • Support product engineering function goals such as the review of engineering standards, engineering process improvements, and 5s.

  • Decompose system level requirements to assembly and component level critical to quality (CTQ) requirements.

  • Develop constructive relationships with cross functional internal teams and customers to efficiently execute programs according to agreed-upon schedules.

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Design Engineering or technical engineering leadership role

  • Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future

  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

  • No relocation benefit is being offered for this position. Only candidates within a 50-mile radius of Jackson, MI will be considered. Active Duty Military Service member candidates are exempt from the geographical area limitation.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of six (6) years’ experience in aerospace component design and development

  • Prior people management experience (direct or indirect) is preferred

  • Product design experience with electro-mechanical products (Examples: Actuators, motors, sensors)

  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green Belt certified

  • Knowledge of fluid conveyance related products, manufacturing techniques and materials

  • Experience with structural analysis and dynamic sealing using elastomeric and polymeric methods is preferred

  • Ability to read and understand Drawings, Specifications, and Requirements

  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Proficiency in CAD (CATIA V5 preferred)

  • Understanding of design evaluation techniques such as reliability analysis, statistical tolerance stack-up, Failure Mode and Effect analysis (FMEA), etc.

  • Proficiency in Product Data Management systems for document control and workflow management (ENOVIA)

  • Ability to read and understand Drawings, Specifications, and Requirements

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite tools

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and switch focus efficiently

  • Ability to compose clear and concise written communication

  • Position requires interaction with customers, customer representatives, auditors, regulatory agencies and all internal departments/functions/levels.

  • Limited travel may be required (10%)
