The Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Division provides critical and quality engineering services to our customers. The division supports technical work on projects ranging in scope from complete new electric system substations down to single I&C device modifications and change-outs, and also includes smart/intelligent I&C devices on electric lines.
The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technical Analyst will support engineers in hardware and software integration for newer smart / programmable / configurable devices, network devices, and legacy electrical devices in electric substations and on electric lines.
This position will also support the detailed design of multiple projects reflected in the design drawings produced by others in the I&C Division. The primary responsibilities of this role include:
Develop, test and maintain software applications (VB.NET) for automated testing and configuration of integrated systems
Develop and maintain documentation processes associated with integrated systems including; hardware, applications, protocols, detailed point lists and revision control.
Typical devices encountered will be programmable automation controllers, communications devices, network devices, SCADA remote terminal units (RTU), protective and control relays, meters, transformer monitors/controllers, transducers and generic controls for intelligent electrical devices (IEDs). The successful candidate should be comfortable working “hands-on” in a lab environment, where system prototyping, test setups and interconnection of devices.

The position is located in Jackson, MI, at the Parnall Road office.
A Bachelor's degree in a scientific/technical field with less than 1 year of experience. (OR) Associate's degree in a scientific/technical field with 2 years of experience in the specific field. (OR) Extensive Company or industry experience in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance.

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (EE), Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), Computer Science or other closely related technical field.
Prior MS Access, MS Excel, MS Word skills
Prior experience with programmable/configurable devices, such as RTUs, PLCs, PACs, protective relays, regulator and recloser controls
Prior experience with networking, connectivity and/or integration
Experience programming in a high level object-oriented language (VB.NET is preferred
Engineering support for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support processes for all utility operations. Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices. Supervise and consult on a complex set of activities in support of the energy delivery systems routinely in the engineering analytical space on a frequent basis. Lead and/or assist with GIS (geographic Information System) model construction, data construction and data analysis. Lead and/or assist with engineering support for the design, plans, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation. Provide engineering support services with accuracy, on time and under budget. Use computer assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering support and design documents. Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects. Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. Assists in client contact and communication. Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public. Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings. Provide all engineering support services in a legal and ethical manner. May review operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents. Individual must be able to clearly communicate with field personal to safely perform equipment checkouts. Individual must be able to understand and comply with NERC standards. Regular attendance is expected.
Hours and Travel
This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week with 90% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. Individual must be able to support 24/7 on call responsibilities which may include travel to the disaster recovery site.
