In the Newborn Screening Program, the Laboratory Scientist A at the senior level position, using considerable independent judgment, has sole and complete responsibility for the more complex and difficult testing, results interpretation and reporting of dried blood specimens of all infants born in the state of Michigan. Testing includes fatty acid oxidation disorders, organic acidemias, aminoacidopathies, lysosomal storage disorders, congenital endocrine disorders, sickle cell anemia and other hemoglobinopathies, peroxisomal disorders, cystic fibrosis, severe combined immunodeficiency and other emerging diseases in the newborn screening field. The senior level position will research, develop, validate and perform extensive laboratory testing and data acquisition in preparation for expansion of Newborn Screening technology as mandated by state law.

Possession of a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, forensic science, or a related pure or applied science.
Laboratory Scientist 9
No specific type or amount is required.
Laboratory Scientist 10
One year of professional experience carrying out a variety of tests, analyses, or production and research activities involving chemical, biochemical and biological samples, specimens, and products equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist 9.
Laboratory Scientist P11
Two years of professional experience carrying out a variety of tests, analyses, or production and research activities involving chemical, biochemical and biological samples, specimens, and products equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist, including one year equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist 10.
Laboratory Scientist 12
Three years of professional experience carrying out a variety of tests, analyses, or production and research activities involving chemical, biochemical and biological samples, specimens, and products equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist, including one year equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist P11.
