The Substation Standards Section is responsible for the development and maintenance of low voltage and high voltage substation standards, material and construction specifications, and other documents and databases as they relate to the various industry codes and standards (i.e. IEEE, NESC, ANSI, etc.). Development and maintenance of department documents involves cross functional cooperation with internal and external parties regarding proposed work and their impacts to substation design, planning and construction, material evaluations, and various other responsibilities associated with Consumers Energy's substation facilities. The position is located within the Electric Standards Department, reporting to the Substation Standards lead.
Job Description/ Responsibilities
The Engineer position in Substation Standards involves a variety of responsibilities in support of the design, engineering, operation, maintenance and construction of substation facilities. Responsibilities include development and maintenance of the Substation Standards blue and brown books, and equipment/material/construction specifications utilized in the procurement of equipment and materials as well as construction of substations. Additional responsibilities include development and maintenance of departmental standard work documents using CE Way principles, tools and databases leveraged by substation design, standards, and construction. Support of these efforts may include material evaluations and management, partnerships with internal and external stakeholders as well as industry research.
The Engineering Job Family is utilized throughout Consumers Energy. Employees in this job family are required to possess a four-year degree in the requisite engineering field from an ABET accredited university.
The successful candidate should have the following specific skills and abilities:
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate across many departments and disciplines, including internal and external individuals with varied technical experience.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Knowledge and experience working in various SAP platforms.
Knowledge of substation materials and or construction practices.
Must be self-motivated and exhibit a positive and professional attitude.
Experience using Computer Aided Design (MicroStation experience preferred).
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, address customer requests, deliver on customer expectations, meet goals and objectives, provide appropriate solutions to problems, and work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
An understanding of electric utility construction practices and limitations.
Professional Engineer license (Michigan) is preferred but not required.
