As part of Water and Protection, Performance Building (PBS) focuses on weatherization and energy efficiency solutions, including the building envelope, air and water sealing, and insulation products. PBS is looking for energetic candidates to fill a Research Scientist position.
The job exists to support revenue growth and value generation for market segments pertinent to PBS. By closely working with commercial/marketing team and the manufacturing teams, the individual in this role will be responsible for developing product technologies and solutions for new foam insulation applications, optimizing current products and processes, and making changes to ensure the sustainability of our product lines.
We are looking for a candidate possessing a strong background and hands-on knowledge/experience in polymer chemistry, polymer science, chemical/polymer engineering and/or material sciences.
This role will work closely with thermoplastic polymer processing, associated chemistry, project teams, and manufacturing plants. The person in this role will at the outset develop into a technology leader in the area and drive product and process development through improved molecular design, materials science, formulation, process design, and product application and performance. The candidate will eventually be a technology focal point for multiple project teams. The role can grow to include other areas of technology and has the potential for future technology and/or group leadership responsibilities.
Examples of Goals Typical for the Job
Identify technologies to allow use of brominated copolymer fire retardants with not only good product performance in styrenic foams (including foam cell size, foam cross section, processing thermal stability, skin quality), and additionally address foam processing challenges that lead to polymer degradation or process corrosion.
Leverage foams extrusion and processing technologies to similar processes and products in other geographies.
Develop new technologies and formulations to meet regulations, improve properties, and lower cost.
Consult on new foam or insulation technologies in the development of new products.
Key Job Requirement/Responsibilities will include:
Technical strength in polymer science, chemistry, materials science, polymer composites, and/or polymer characterization and processing.
Specialization and experience with extrusion and foam science and processing is valued.
Ability to learn and contribute to improved properties/polymer processing/chemistry related to foam products
Formulation and application expertise
Enable close cooperation between the R&D, Manufacturing & Engineering, Finance, Sales and Marketing, and other R&D groups (both internal and external)
Core capability of utilizing the Scientific Method and ability to lead multiple hypothesis-based research projects across R&D businesses utilizing stage-gate methodologies
Lead laboratory, pilot plant, or in-plant data generation and analysis
Act as equipment and area owner for lab and pilot plant assets
Ensure appropriate intellectual property is created to protect DuPont technology and competitive advantages, documentation of results in reports
Technical presentations at company meetings, technical conferences, and customer/partner facilities.
Maintain a high level of safety awareness at the program level and is a vocal safety advocate in all operations at the department level.
Identifies opportunities for improvement in products, processes, or organization for business benefit.
PhD in Polymer Processing, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field, or BS / MS / MEng and appropriate experience.
Strong background in utilizing multiple analytical procedures to identify and characterize products, such as NMR, GPC and image analysis.
Understanding of synthesis and characterization of organic compounds or polymers is preferred.
Experience in the science and processing of polymer composites and nanocomposites is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to analyze prior art and incorporating information and knowledge management tools and systems into work. Proficiently uses patent analysis tools to maintain expert understanding of a technology/market area.
Preferred demonstrated ability, outstanding accomplishments, and recognition competence in a polymer and foams specialty.
Recognized within the department or organization for effectiveness and credibility.
Strong knowledge and demonstrated use of statistics and DOE principles.
Must be able to work well in teams and to work independently with limited supervision.
Highly motivated and self-directed individual with the ability to interact with employees at all levels in the organization.
Experience with operation of small pilot plants, or process scale-up is desired.
Research experiences in polymer processing, engineering (interpreting GPC results), extrusion or reactor modeling (including kinetic modeling), scale-up, and statistical methods (for experimental design and data analysis).
Demonstrated ability to make clear, persuasive, concise, and well-organized oral presentations.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
This position requires a significant amount of both desk/computer work, laboratory and pilot plant work (stairs), as well as the ability to travel and work in a plant environment of varied temperatures and humidity.
Work environment includes the laboratory, general office and manufacturing plant. Daily contact with employees in other departments and regions is required.
Position will require up to 20% travel to plant or customer facilities.
