The Role

The Transmission Aluminum Castings Global Technical Specialist is responsible to provide engineering leadership to a cross functional engineering team through design, development and validation of innovative die cast propulsion system components. Theselected candidate will have technical specialist responsibility globally for cast aluminum transmission components including Valve Bodies, Shifting Systems Housings, Clutch Hubs, Apply Pistons and Balance Dams.

Responsibilities

  • Guide technically the product engineering team through the design, development and validation of cast transmission controls and shifting systems components.
  • Guide technically the design release engineering team to resolve development and quality issues with their components, conduct failure root cause analysis, and execute cost and warranty reduction plans.
  • Lead the development and documentation of engineering best practices (Bill of Design).
  • Lead the development and documentation of validation plan (DVP&R/ADV) and DFMEA templates.
  • Lead the development of performance, process and quality technical specifications for the Statement of Requirements (SOR) used to facilitate component sourcing.
  • Establish a detailed understanding of the manufacturing and technical capabilities of potential future and current production suppliers of transmission castings globally.
  • Establish new and maintain working relationships with key contacts throughout the supply base.
  • Understand the future of the industry and guide the engineering team to embrace innovative technologies and capture intellectual property where required. Lead benchmarking efforts of industry competitors.
  • Explore, review and approve additions to the Technically Approved Supplier List (TASL) by visiting supply base manufacturing locations globally on a regular basis.
  • Represent engineering on the casting Creativity Team with Purchasing to provide technical guidance regarding future supply base and sourcing strategies.
  • Serve as approver for supplier technical reviews and stakeholder meetings related to engineering changes.
  • Interface with program leadership including Chief Engineers and staff to provide technical design direction on behalf of the Program Management Team.
  • Train the design release engineering team on casting design and manufacturing processes, best practices and issue resolution techniques.
  • Lead in the development and documentation of UPC/FNA codes for castings components within Controls & Shifting Systems PMTs
  • Participate in global Controls & Shifting Systems Program Management Team change review boards to provide technical guidance regarding new/major/minor designs to ensure appropriate design strategy and adherence to engineering best practices.
  • Champion read-across of issue resolution to ensure lessons learned are appropriately captured across programs.
  • 20% travel required (domestic & international).

R equired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Materials Engineering or equivalent experience with a Bachelor of Science degree.

  • Minimum ten years of experience in at least ONE of the following:

  • Demonstrated strong understanding of GD&T high pressure die casting process tolerance capabilities

  • Demonstrated strong experience independently resolving challenging die casting quality issues

  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills and ability to present complex technical topics

  • Demonstrated ability to make sound data driven decisions and recommendations

  • Demonstrated experience creating & maintaining a positive atmosphere in a collaborative work team

  • DFSS Black Belt Certification

  • Experience in stamping manufacturing process development and die design

  • Experience in casting processes beyond high pressure die cast

  • Materials engineering background

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering
