Navistar, Inc. HV Battery Controls/Diagnostics Engineer in Rochester Hills, Michigan

Position Overview

We are seeking a HV Battery Controls/Diagnostics Engineer to develop system-level RESS controls requirements that meet Government, Navistar, and appropriate industry standards. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Perform assessments of supplier proposed battery-management solutions based on merit, field history, cost, and alignment with Navistar's goals.

  • Ensure that system-level architecture and communications are compatible with other subsystems on the vehicle (voltage-ranges, power capability, communication protocols, etc.).

  • Ensure communications and diagnostics protocols are in-line with service expectations and allow for appropriate level of control, fault-detection, and mitigation.

  • Work with RESS (Rechargeable Energy Storage System) hardware team to ensure I/O requirements are aligned and meet controls and diagnostics targets

  • Support service organization in determining and documenting the appropriate procedures to correct faults.

  • Work with supplier to correct controls issues, optimize and improve features, validate new features and versions of BMS (Battery Management System) software via simulation, on the bench, and development/test vehicles.

  • Manage software roll-out processes.

  • Work to diagnose and resolve RESS controls issues during development and production.

  • Work closely with BMS supplier to meet all the goals described; track status and report-out to management as needed.

  • Develop communication architectures for HV ECUs

  • Manage and release CAN database files; incorporate off-the-shelf DBCs into Navistar standard DBCs

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities


  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 6 years of experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities


  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 3 years of experience in product design/development

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Navistar does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)

Desired Skills

  • Experience in using CANalzyer, CANape, CAN logging and file translation, ValueCAN

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong controls & controls architecture background with emphasis on BMS

  • Experience and strong knowledge of J1939 and UDS protocols

  • Translating vehicle-level requirements into component-level software requirements

  • Ability to understand and trouble-shoot state-flow/model-based software architectures
