Nexteer Automotive R&D Engineer- Steer by Wire (2020) in Saginaw, Michigan

The Nexteer Automotive Steer-by-Wire engineering team continues to grow and evolve as we are working with multiple customers in support of their development of demonstration vehicles and design requirements. At the same time the team is developing and refining our own production-intent designs for offering on anticipated upcoming requests for new business quotes. Steer-by-wire technology is an exciting development in the automotive industry, gathering considerable interest from many areas. It provides significant benefits for both traditional and autonomously-driven vehicles, being a key enabler for the Nexteer Quiet Wheel technology and seamless transitions between autonomous and human drivers. We are looking for an energetic Mechanical Engineer to design power steering columns specifically for this purpose.

This position is located in Saginaw, MI


  • Development of new steering columns, actuators and gear boxes to meet new market requirements

  • Design and release of steering products and components

  • Coordinate prototyping of your designs

  • Support new business pursuit activities

  • Coordinate with Validation Engineers for timely completion of development and validation activity

  • Coordinate change management activities for assigned responsibilities

  • Timely communication of project status and relevant issues

  • Conduct meetings; provide technical support for project teams or plant operations

  • Regular contact with others outside the work group

  • Coordinate with vendors and customers

  • Apply concurrent engineering principles

  • Support continuous improvement activities


Degree: Bachelors Required and Masters Preferred

Major: Mechanical Engineering

  • Greater than 3 years of experience

  • Automotive experience required

  • Steering column design and development experience required

  • Demonstrated understanding of functional roles important to project delivery, especially product & manufacturing engineering, prototyping, testing, purchasing, quality and marketing

  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others

  • Knowledge of steering systems product design process and/or tooling and manufacturing processes preferred

  • Demonstrated profound technical knowledge of vehicle steering systems preferred

  • Ability to evaluate various technology alternatives to achieve project goals, especially design - process trade offs

  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and coordinate multi-functional activities

  • Strong supporter of concurrent engineering. Customer focused.

  • Demonstrated commitment for disciplined approach to project management

  • Excellent oral & written skills

  • Knowledge / Expertise in the following: Microsoft Office, Problem Solving Techniques
