Nexteer Automotive Systems Engineer - Controls (2018) in Saginaw, Michigan

We are looking for a technical expert who is well versed in mechatronic modeling and controls. The ideal candidate will have experience with Matlab, Simulink, Adams, CAN communication, embedded systems and embedded controls. Through the integration of internal and customer dynamic performance requirements, the candidate will develop dynamic system models of electric power steering systems and calibrate performance of existing functions. Additionally they will generate and troubleshoot new algorithms to enhance system performance. In this position, there is an opportunity to develop leading edge technology, which could result in patents. A high level of communication skills, both written and verbal are required as the candidate will interact with internal and external customers to ensure deadlines and requirements are met.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the design and analysis of the controls of electronic power steering systems using dynamic system modeling and simulation

  • Completes validation of control system requirements

  • Provides technical leadership for projects incorporating complex electromechanical (“Mechatronic”) systems

  • Designs and optimizes multiple system performance goals through requirements flow down

  • Understands and creates system and subsystem specifications

  • Effectively integrates all aspects of system design through the use of multi-disciplinary engineering

  • Tunes vehicle steering characteristics, diagnoses and corrects deficiencies in designs and prototypes

  • Uses rapid prototyping tools for system development

  • Assists in maintaining cost controls

  • Stays abreast of new technology

Required Skills:

  • Expertise in classical control theory

  • Experienced in controller design methodologies such as PID and LQR

  • Strong programming and simulation skills (with Matlab/Simulink) and experience performing engineering calculations using spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel)

  • General competency and experience in vehicle dynamics, mechanical systems, electronic systems, and computer hardware and software

  • Excellent problem solving techniques

  • Good organization and documentation abilities

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time

Preferred:

  • At least 2 years of relevant job experience is highly desirable

  • Background in ride and handling of cars and possess valid drivers license

  • Motivated to learn about self-driving cars, including topics such as ADAS sensors, camera, radar, lidar, ultrasonic, model predictive controls (MPC), machine learning

  • Knowledge of model-based design, model-in-the-loop testing

  • Software programming experience using C, C#, and Python

  • Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (CAN, CAN FD, Flexray) and Vector CANape

  • Experience with automatic embedded code generation tools such as the Mathworks toolsets (Real Time Workshop, Autocode Generation, Embedded Coder) and dSpace MicroAutoBox

  • Background in automotive engineering and chassis systems (steering, braking, suspension)

Educational Requirements:

Master’s Degree (PhD preferred) – Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis in controls
