Eaton Corporation Specialist Controls Engineer in Southfield, Michigan

Eaton’s Vehicle Group is currently seeking a Specialist Controls Engineer to join our eMobility team. This position is based at our Galesburg, MI, Southfield, MI or Marshall, MI.

Position Overview:

This is a Controls Specialist position responsible for the implementation of embedded controls software solutions for the eMobility Group.

The Controls Specialist serves as a technical subject matter expert (SME) in the area of embedded electro-mechanical controls; creates strategy, direction, priorities and leads the controls team to drive business results / improvements in division/region. The Controls Specialist possesses a broad strategic vision of the division’s future products and services and provides consultation in controls applications. This role is involved in a wide variety and large number of projects and conducts feasibility studies to ensure objectives are met within budget.

The Controls Specialist will guide the development of controls system requirements, contribute to definition of electronics hardware design, design embedded software architecture and algorithm solutions, define Validation & Verification strategy; as well as, the overall V-cycle process to confirm that system and functional requirements are met. This role will be responsible for working with team members and engineering managers to estimate development, resources and timing to achieve the desired results. The Controls Specialist will have the opportunity to be mentored and trained by senior level managers and directors to help grow leadership experience. This role will be expected to train and mentor less experienced engineers and will provide technical direction to Eaton engineering centers globally.

In this function you will:

  • Successfully leads projects/programs of various complexity, involving multiple hardware and software components. Delivers software solutions with a focus on completeness, compatibility, and compliance.

  • Identifies opportunities within the company and technical associations that enhances business performance, while having a sphere of influence at the division level. Demonstrates leadership on software and controls engineering projects. Possesses strong understanding of controls software development cycles and processes including V-cycle.

  • Provides expert input to embedded controls development activities involving vehicle system dynamics, controls/plant model simulation methodologies and xIL toolchain integration activities.

  • Evaluates embedded system level requirements and controls algorithm proposals to meet product performance, functionality and robustness requirements. Helps define and improve embedded controls standards and processes, and contributes to industry technical papers and conferences

  • Invents and develops embedded control system strategies and guides architecture design to achieve solutions. Uses debugging and simulation tools to efficiently perform design iterations and optimization. Verifies solutions created by oneself or other team members through simulation, sub-system, hardware-in-the-loop and vehicle level testing

  • Drives implementation consistency across multiple resources contributing to the same embedded system architecture. Champions and documents improvements to the engineering standard work processes we use to engineer our products.

  • Utilizes industry functional safety processes to enhance design robustness. Provides strategic direction to the validation/verification process at a unit, sub-system and vehicle level to meet the controls and functional safety requirements; as well as, provids guidance to simulation, test stand and vehicle level data analysis activities.

    Qualifications

    Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering from an accredited university.

  • Minimum of 7 years experience with embedded control system applications

  • Experience with Controller Networks(CAN)

  • Experience with MIL(Model in the Loop)

  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink code/module generation

  • No relocation benefit is being offered for this position. Only candidates within a 50-mile radius of Galesburg, MI, Marshall, MI or Southfield, MI will be considered. Active Duty Military Service member candidates are exempt from the geographical area limitation.

    Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in electrical, controls, software or relevant engineering field

  • Experience with Controller Area Networks (e.g. SAE-J1939, CANOpen)

  • Experience with HIL testing and validation

  • Experience with Vector tools such as CANape and CANalyzer.

  • The ideal candidate would have experience in, or knowledge of automotive drivetrain/powertrain systems and components.

  • Project management skills to assess task effort, manage priorities, and report status.

  • Good communication skills with ability to interface directly with external partners, suppliers, and both internal and external customers.

  • Experience with change management and software release processes in a team environment

  • Formal training in Functional Safety requirements (e.g. ISO26262 or IEC61508)
