Join the Advanced and Architecture Design Studio at General Motors – the industry leader in new automotive technology, future mobility and user experience. In the advanced studio in Warren, Michigan you will be an integral part of the team that manages all work defining vehicle architecture and projects for future mobility concepts and strategy for new business opportunities. GM Design helps lead the work to redefine our business and disrupt the market, and the advanced design studio in Warren is central to defining strategy and visualizing these products and services.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work independently in developing new designs and concepts for transportation-related products and experiences. Working with other design personnel, you will produce innovative design solutions that comprehend future mobility needs and align with our corporate vision. We encourage devolved decision making with guidance from experienced leaders. Work with a self-guided and entrepreneurial spirit, integrating work with cohesive team and leadership reviews.
Creates original design ideas at both a product and system level
Take a big-picture perspective on customer needs and future transportation and create provocative concepts
Makes perspective sketches and renderings in scale and full size sufficient to communicate new design ideas
Communicate transportation concepts at a system level reflecting a visionary user experience
Exhibit design courage and challenge expectations
Develops two and three-dimensional mock-ups of proposed design solutions
Works effectively with people across functions and throughout the design
Stays current with design trends across traditional and non-traditional transportation fields
Presents new thoughts and designs both orally and visually
Identify and illustrate product solutions with an emphasis on innovation
Assists other designers in coordinating design activities
Frequent contact with others outside the work group
Understands program timelines and is proactive regarding task completion
Ability to create and communicate new design ideas
Qualifications - External
Entry Level - 8 years of experience in a design related field, automotive is strongly desired but not necessarily essential.
Strong understanding of form
Good drawing and graphic skills
Demonstrated creative proficiency with supporting portfolio
Ability to create perspective sketches and renderings in scale and full size
Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others
Good oral and written communication skills
Contributes to creative and aesthetic design solutions
Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
Good analytical ability where problems are somewhat complex
Some strategic ability to identify opportunities and describe cohesive solutions
Education and Training:
- Bachelor degree with a major in product design, industrial design, or related field
