Responsible for specifying requirements, execution and evaluation of designs, analysis, development, testing and control of major engineering projects where creativity and initiative are involved as well as a high level of independent judgment. Consults with leadership as required.
The Propulsion System Engineer (PSE) will work as part of a team to perform system engineering and analysis to define requirements of hybrid & electric propulsion system and components. Requirements to be defined may include overall hybrid & electric propulsion system performance, high voltage system, high voltage battery pack, electric motor, high voltage power electronics, engine, transaxle/transmission.
The specific responsibilities of this Propulsion System Engineering position include:
Interacting with vehicle teams to define powertrain to vehicle interface requirements and design
Flow down interface requirements to powertrain component engineers
Support RCE, ICD, and SSTS requirements: planning, testing, development, analysis, and documentation
Support PSIE in requirements development
Lead or support system related PRTS investigations and problem solving (solve the difficult physics problems)
Lead or support design or trade studies as needed
Conduct and/or support propulsion system-level DFMEA
Propulsion system-level development:
Resolve technical issues at system-level.
Define test objectives,
Provide input to test engineers,
Recommend corrective actions,
Recommend requirements changes,
Provide system & component DFMEA updates,
Provide lessons learned updates, and
Review PRTS (Problem Resolution and Tracking System) closures, etc.
Additional Job Description
Bachelors' degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Energy Systems, or Computer Engineering
Previous Battery Electric and Fuel Cell Propulsion Systems experience
Minimum 5 years automotive experience
Minimum 3 years of experience in electrified propulsion system analysis, integration, design and/or development
Experience leading technical teams in root cause analysis and problem solving
Effective communication (written/oral) and interpersonal skills required to build relationships with global team members and customers
Experience in analyzing, summarizing, and presenting complex issues in technical forums
DFSS Green Belt
Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Energy Systems Engineering
Experience with automotive electric propulsion systems
Experience with automotive conventional engines and transmissions
Skilled with software & calibration tools, vehicle instrumentation, etc. (e.g. CAN tools, INCA etc.)
Knowledge of electric motors, power inverters and other power electronics
Knowledge of high voltage propulsion batteries, battery chemistry, battery state estimation techniques
Experience with Matlab
