General Motors Engineering Design & Development (ED&D) Lead Cost Engineer - Product Program Cost Optimization (PPCO) - Finance - FIN0010832 in Warren, Michigan

The ED & D Lead Cost Engineer is responsible to create, analyze and validate subsystem component level ED & D cost targets. The ED & D Lead Cost Engineer will work with multiple cross-functional organizations and function as the single voice from PPCO to the internal customer for subsystem ED & D related cost information. The ED & D Lead Cost Engineer will be responsible for managing the standardized cost methodologies and processes used for validating component design & testing. The selected candidate will have a high degree of autonomy and must possess the business acumen and technical expertise to drive cost reduction efforts.

This role involves a high level of independent judgment, initiative and creativity in support of multiple programs. The ED & D Lead Cost Engineer will have exposure to the next generation of engineering design while helping to shape the integration of leading edge automotive technologies.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyze costs to engineer, design and test components from inception to production
  • Collaborate globally to comprehend manufacturing and process differences in all regions
  • Provide design feedback for optimum cost and processing performance
  • Partner with GM’s purchasing team during supplier negotiations
  • Actively pursue avenues to reduce costs to meet budgets
  • Occasional domestic and international travel to supplier facilities for enhanced costing collaboration

Education: BS Engineering, or BS with related technical experience

Required Skills:

  • Experienced in the financial evaluation of technical concepts and comprehensive understanding of part design and testing requirements
  • Specific knowledge of engineering discipline (e.g. mechanics, physics, metallurgy, manufacturing methods, electronics, software, control systems) within job-related area
  • High level of oral & written communication
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and assignments with a high degree of autonomy and accountability for results
  • Familiarity with the GDVP process, gates and milestones
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical /electrical mechanisms
  • Ability to lead change and resolve conflicts
  • Able to assimilate large amounts of cost data, condense this data for vehicle level reporting to upper management
  • Analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills required to build relationships with global team members
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering project management
  • Demonstrated ability in use of Microsoft Office software

Preferred Skills:

  • 3 – 5 years cost engineering experience
  • 5 + years in engineering design
  • Experience with GMCost / eSOR
  • Experience with any of the following:

  • Development of supplier component and/or tooling quotes to OEM’s

  • Plastic or Injection Molding
  • Infotainment
  • Interiors
  • Automotive Subsystem and Component Assembly
