Research Technician, Structural Materials & Systems – Wyandotte, Michigan

In this position, the Research Technician will be responsible for carrying out research activities in the lab that relate to thermoplastic materials. The candidate will perform tasks under the direction of research scientists and occasionally independently. The work includes exploratory and applied research on the synthesis, characterization, and processing of thermoplastic polyurethanes. This position’s responsibilities include operating and maintaining polymer processing equipment such as injection molders and extruders; managing material inventories; and communicating with internal and external suppliers, testing facilities, and occasionally customers.

Formula for Success: You Will…

The primary responsibility for this position is to work in close partnership with the research scientists to carry out polymer synthesis, characterization, and application experiments on laboratory scale and pilot plant scale equipment to support the research projects:

  • Carry out research activities in polymer synthesis laboratory

  • Plan and execute synthesis work and report results in a timely and well-organized fashion

  • Responsible for day to day operations and maintenance of thermoplastic processing equipment such as extruders and injection molders

  • Processing, characterization, and testing of thermoplastic polyurethanes and engineering plastics

  • All work is done in good collaboration and discussion with other technicians and scientists working in the same area

  • Maintain clear and accurate records of the work performed through timely entering, updating, and closing projects in a database

  • Strict adherence to established safety standards

  • Develop ideas that improve the safety, efficiency, and overall effectiveness of the laboratory and team

  • Contribute to writing standard operating procedures for laboratory tasks and equipment

  • Capable of working in a structured environment where activities are governed by written procedures

  • Be flexible and capable to adopt priority changes daily

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • 1 year of experience working in a chemical laboratory environment

  • 1 year of experience with operating machinery and troubleshooting

  • 1 year of experience with MS Office

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in Chemistry or related technical discipline

  • Experience with writing and maintaining a laboratory notebook and creating Standard Operating Procedures

  • Experience in polymer processing techniques such as injection molding and extrusion

  • Previous working experience with plastic characterization and processing

  • 1 year of experience with polyurethane formulations

  • Understanding of polymer chemistry

  • Prior experience in materials research
